Does my credit card cover rental cars?

Short answer: Many credit cards include some form of rental-car coverage as a cardholder benefit, but what the benefit actually does varies enormously by issuer and product tier. The definitive source is your card's benefits guide — published online or available from the number on the back of the card. Three things in it matter most: whether the coverage responds as primary or secondary, which vehicle types and rental situations are excluded, and what documentation the claim process demands.

Primary versus secondary changes real outcomes. Secondary coverage pays only after your own auto policy has responded first, which exposes your policy's deductible and inserts a claim onto your personal record. Primary coverage steps in without touching your personal policy at all — which is why travelers with existing auto insurance sometimes still prefer the card route. Premium travel cards advertise collision coverage as primary; plenty of no-annual-fee cards offer secondary only, or none.

Exclusions deserve equal attention: large SUVs and vans, pickups, vehicles rented abroad, long-term rentals past a consecutive-day cap, and exotic classes are commonly excluded, and activation rules are easy to miss — many programs require the entire rental to be paid with that specific card and require declining the counter's collision waiver in writing. This one deserves specialist advice, not a checkout button.
