What is CDW when renting a car?

Short answer: CDW — Collision Damage Waiver, sold alongside its sibling LDW, Loss Damage Waiver — is technically not insurance. It is a contractual provision purchased at the counter under which the rental company agrees to waive its right to collect from you for specified kinds of damage to, or theft of, the vehicle during your rental.

The waiver binds you to conduct conditions: authorized driver behind the wheel, roads permitted by the agreement, prompt incident reporting, keys accounted for, sober operation. Violating those voids the protection regardless of having paid for it. Coverage scope also varies by program — some waive everything from bumper to bumper, while others carve out glass, tires, roof, or undercarriage, leaving precisely the parts common in everyday incidents partially exposed. Administrative and loss-of-use charges are treated differently between programs too.

Because alternatives exist — credit-card benefits that replace this exact function when activation rules are followed, personal policies extending to substitutes — the decision is fundamentally about overlap analysis among documents you already hold rather than about the counter menu alone. Reading those documents before arriving turns the waiver purchase from a pressured decision into a planned one, whichever way it lands. This one deserves specialist advice, not a checkout button.
