CARVSTHE VERSUS-ENGINE · RATES BOARDED DAILY

COMPARISON & LOGISTICS

Why do rental car prices vary minute to minute?

Short answer: Rental pricing is dynamic almost everywhere: suppliers reprice inventory continuously against predicted demand, current fleet availability at that location, how far ahead you book, and how many competing suppliers are loaded for the same window. Two identical searches run an hour apart can return different boards without either result being wrong.

Several layers compound underneath the headline rate. Location-specific loads — airport concession recovery, facility charges, city and state taxes — are applied per booking class. Fleet matching matters too: if a location runs short on mid-size cars, its rates move first and fastest. Lead time shifts everything again; the same week booked on the same day-of-week usually prices differently six months out than two weeks out.

Our position on this volatility is deliberate honesty rather than silence. The board shows a status badge stating whether results are live, served from cache minutes old, hours old, or falling back to typical-spread estimates when the feed is unavailable — so you always know the age of what you are looking at. We never quietly substitute an old quote for a fresh search, and we never manufacture urgency around the movement itself.
